Flow Through An Orifice

FLOW THROUGH AN ORIFICE
Consider a tank fitted with a small circular orifice and fluid is discharging free in to the atmosphere.
Let's consider two sections 1 and 2
Section 1 is top of the upstream side of the orifice and section 2 being slightly to the right of orifice on the datum line and at the vena contracta .
Applying Bernaulli's equation at the point 1 and 2.
ie, p1/eg+v1^2/2g+z1=p2/eg+v2^2/2g+z2
But p1=pa
Where, pa is the atmospheric pressure.because the point 1 and 2 are contact with outside pressure.so these pressures are considered as pa.
=v1^2/2g+z1=v2^2/2g+z2
The cross sectional area of the tank is very large.the liquid at the point 1 is practically at rest when compared ton the point 2 at vena contracta.
v1=0
There for z1=v2^2/2g+z2
Assuming the datum line along the centre of the orifice.then,
z1=H
z2=0
H=v2^2/2g+0
ie,H=v2^2/2g
v2^2=2gH
v2=2gH
This is the theoretical velocity.

Partially Submerged Orifice

PARTIALLY SUBMERGED ORIFICE
If the liquid level on down stream side is above the bottom edge and below the top edge of the orifice,the orifice is said to be partially submerged orifice.
Sharp Edged Orifice
The orifices is said to be sharp edged when liquid flows out has to pass through sharp line bountry of the orifice.
Bell Mouthed Orifice
The orifice is said to be bell mouthed,when it is in the form of a crustum  of a corn and liquid flows out has to contact with the entire inside surface of the orifices.

Free Discharge And Fully Submerged Orifices

FREE DISCHARGE ORIFICE
If there is no liquid on the down steam side of a orifice and the orifice will discharge freely to atmosphere without the obstruction caused by liquid on the down stream side is known as free orifice and it's discharge is called free discharge.
FULLY SUBMERGED ORIFICE
If the liquid level on down stream side is above the top edge of the orifice is fully submerged orifice.

Orifice And Mouth Piece

ORIFICE
Orifice is a small opening of any cross section such as circular,rectangular,triangular,etc.In the side wall of the tank through which the fluid flows out.The top edge of the orifice is always below the free surface level of the liquid in the tank.
MOUTH PIECE
Mouth piece is an attachment in the form of a short length of tube.which is usually 2 to 3 times the orifice diameter in length fixed to the orifice and is used to increase the amount of discharge.
The orifice is used to measure the discharge or rate of fluid in a tank.
